The Region
The Murcia Region is located in an unspoilt corner of South-East Spain, with 250km of Mediterranean coastline known as the Costa Calida or "Warm Coast". Although Murcia is growing quickly as a holiday destination, it clings proudly to its charms and traditions and has no intention of losing these. The region boasts glorious beaches, historic cities dating from Moorish times, a rich culture and heritage with areas of outstanding natural beauty, and wonderful food and drink. This, coupled with one of the best climates in Southern Europe, make Murcia a holiday destination that can be enjoyed by visitors of all ages and interests.
Murcia is an important city in the south east of Spain, along the Segura river. It is home to close to 450,000 people and is also a major university town, with many foreign students. Murcia is close to very fertile agricultural plains where much fresh produce is grown. Orange and lemon orchards can be seen for miles, as well as some 100,000 acres of vineyards. Many foreigners have summer residences in this area and tourism has increased considerably. Visitors to the region have a wide choice of outings: bullfights, theatre, museums, and cinemas. Many cultural festivals are organized in Murcia, the most vibrant of which takes place during Holy Week.
The Cities
The region takes its name from Murcia City, located 40km inland from the Mar Menor coast. This cosmopolitan city is full of charming squares and pedestrian areas and has excellent shopping facilities. At the heart of the city lies an outstanding baroque cathedral, one of the best preserved in the whole of Spain.
Founded by the Carthaginians in 223BC and once one of the largest Roman cities in Spain, the ancient coastal port city of Cartagena is one of Murcia's gems. The city contains historically important architecture from Carthagnian, Roman and Moorish times, and the ancient naval port of Cartagena has been converted into a magnificent luxury marina for yachts.
